Parent and Community Liaison

Position Description:
As part of a team, the Parent and Community Liaison serves as the connection between the school, home, and community to encourage parent and community involvement in school activities in order to enhance student success and satisfaction.

Position is Part-time
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • • Assists parents with the enrollment process as needed
    • Provides oral and written translation services in Spanish as needed
    • Assists with providing general information or assistance to Spanish speaking parents and students
    • Visits with parents to encourage participation in school activities, and to take an active interest in their children’s educational progress
    • Coordinates parent meetings and workshops that includes working with district and/or school administration to create agendas, arranging for speakers, creating flyers and invitations, distributing information to parents and students, and arranging for refreshments/food for the Annual Title I Meeting, bi-monthly site-based council meetings, quarterly open houses, quarterly migrant parent advisory council meetings, and quarterly Family Involvement Action Team (FIAT) meetings
    • Speaks before groups of parents, students, and community organizations about school programs and activities
    • Coordinates adult education activities including, ESL and parenting classes
    • Communicates parental concerns and questions regarding school matters with Lead Teacher
    • Receives training on and works with the Homeless Liaison to implement requirements of the McKinney-Vento Program, which includes identifying and referring potential students for the program
    • Inform parents of assistance available to students and families, such as Title I tutoring, SEI, special education, behavioral health counseling, scholarships, transportation, and services from outside agencies
    • Assists parents and students to develop an understanding of school policies and procedures by encouraging participation on the School Site-Based Council
    • Develops connections between school staff, parents, and students
    • Serves as an advocate for parents and students
    • Acts as a liaison with neighborhood associations
    • Works closely with district and school administration to assess school needs in order to develop programming that is specific to those needs
    • Works closely with the Director of Federal & State Programs to implement Title I goals and activities as they relate to parent and community involvement
    • Works closely with the Migrant Program Specialist to implement Migrant Education goals and activities
    • Works closely with the FIAT Team Leader to implement parent involvement goals and activities outlined in the Title I School Improvement Family & Community Engagement grant
    • Upholds and enforces school policies and procedures, Board policies, and federal and state regulations and requirements
    • Prepares and completes routine reports such as weekly time and effort log, home visit form, bi-annual time and effort certification, and other reports required by federal and state programs
    • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by Director of Federal & State Programs and Lead Teacher


Education & Experience:
           MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED.

Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Knowledge of community resources.

Must enjoy working with a diverse population of families and community members.

Must possess a Class I FBI Fingerprint and Background Clearance Card.

Valid Arizona driver’s license and clearance/approval from corporate auto insurer.

Must have reliable transportation.

Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs.

Any combination of academic education, professional training or work experience, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Associates Degree or higher.

One or more years experience as a volunteer or working with a school or community organization.

Extensive knowledge of community resources and ability to make referrals to agencies.
